Asian Stocks Rebound Fizzles Out

Forex: Carry trades continued at the start of the Asian session, as stock markets rebounded in a knee-jerk reaction to the Fed's emergency rate cut. But the rebound in Asian stocks lacked conviction, and carry trades reversed in the afternoon. "The very crux of the reason we didn't have a snapback (stocks) rally is that the market was calling for this already," said Peter McCorry at Keefe Bruyette & Woods, referring to the market's reaction to the Fed's 75bps interest rate cut. The NZD/JPY erased early gains despite talk of Uridashi issues later this week. The AUD failed to hold on to data-related gains after the stronger than expected Q4 inflation data, with AUD/JPY selling dragging down AUD/USD. AUD/USD is currently trading below the 60% retracement of its recent drop from 0.9021 to 0.8504.

Top-Shelf Digs At Libraries

And along Arch Street, a three-story wing provides another 23,000 square feet.

Certainly, the library is still rooted in books. It's home to the Hartford History Center, a conservatory of 50,000 volumes, many printed when Hartford was a publishing powerhouse. And a hefty portion of the 400,000 items in the library's collection are books.

But the new space isn't just rooms filled with static hardcovers. Everywhere there's activity signaling that the place is alive.

One of our first stops is the new children's wing, where something resembling a colorful sandbox is sprouting from the ground. It's an art project, Blalock explains, that kids created with a local artist to commemorate the "Day of the Dead," a Mexican holiday.

As we continue to the 28-computer "learning lab," I spot another colorful exhibition, this time by born-and-raised Hartford photographer Carla Ten Eyck.

Stocks Advance, Led by Techs

Stocks closed higher Wednesday after reversing an earlier drop. Technology issues were among the session's best performers, aided by a strong earnings report from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Financial stocks rose later in the day, as minutes from Federal Reserve January policy meetings apparently supported hopes for further interest rate cuts. Stocks tied to precious metals and oil got a lift from gains in commodities futures, as crude oil topped the $100 mark once again to close at a new record.

Investors also digested reports showing worsening inflation risks and only slight improvement in the housing market.

On Wednesday, the Dow Jones industrial average finished higher by 90.04 points, or 0.73%, at 12,427.26. The broader S&P 500 index added 11.25 points, or 0.83%, to end at 1,360.03.

Patrick defends Obama on national TV

This whole flap is a page out of the Republican "Swift Boat" playbook. Take your opponent's strenght and undermine it! I expect the Clinton camp to trot out a group of retired speech writers who "were with Obama in Illinios" and know that he didn't write all of the speeches credited to him.

Diamond Offshore profts dip on reduced Gulf activity

Diamond Offshore Drilling, the operator of the world's second-largest fleet of deepwater rigs, said fourth-quarter profit fell 25 percent on one-time tax costs and reduced drilling in shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Net income fell to $164.9 million, or $1.19 a share, from $221.4 million, or $1.60, a year earlier, Houston-based Diamond said today in a statement. Excluding the tax costs, the profit missed by 6 cents the average of 16 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The company declared a special dividend of $1.25 a share.

The company's shares rebounded from a drop of as much as 6 percent after President Lawrence Dickerson told analysts on a conference call that there is a "modest recovery or stabilization" of rig demand in the Gulf's shallow waters.

Anti-loiter device makes kids 'guinea pigs'

We're concerned that it's taking technology and turning the children into guinea pigs," he said.

"People say that no-one's ears can be hurt by this, but surely children's ears can be hurt if it's offensive to them and we don't know what damage it's doing to the children.

"Most times if children are loitering there are other measures that councils could and perhaps should try to take."

Packaging SOA: What serves the customer?

I was talking to a CIO the other day about the whole area of Service Oriented Architectures. It was one of those interesting probing discussions around key players, emerging technologies and the like. One of the interesting topics that came up was around packaged software. This CIO was confused about a major issue. What is the benefit and danger of implementing a package software offering that has all the industry best practices, business process and middleware integrated together? What are the opportunities and risks of this approach? Likewise, what are the risks of buying piece parts and integrating them together?

This is an important question and one that I have obvious opinions about. I think that it can be dangerous for companies to buy a too well integrated SOA environment from a single vendor.

Heard on the street: Parsvnath Developers, IFSL, F&O segment

Are you a Sai Baba devotee who also happens to be stock market investor? If yes, you may have possibly taken a fancy for Parsvnath Developers which has just bagged a contract for constructing Sai Ashram at Shirdi in Maharashtra. The counter has been in the thick of action ahead of the company's announcement on Monday.

Though the price has moved sharply, analysts feel one can not really link the rally with the latest development. They, in fact, say the market has probably been discounting the progress that the company has achieved in some of its projects — besides the Shirdi contract — an IT park in Gurgaon and pharma SEZ in Nanded.

Parsvnath Developers was the one of the top gainers, ending 8.5% up at Rs 574.2 on Monday after touching a new peak of Rs 598 intra-day.
