Thomson Financial Europe AM at a glance share guide: Stocks mixed; oil ...

Data on Friday showing a higher-than-expected rise in U.S. wholesalers' inventories provided Wall Street with little new evidence about the economy's health. A motley batch of corporate earnings failed to provide much reassurance to investors. Some companies such as software maker McAfee Inc and jewelry maker Tiffany & Co seem to be faring well despite the economic slowdown, but others, including paper and wood product maker Weyerhaueser Co, are struggling. BONDS: Government bond prices rose. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, fell to 3.65 pct from 3.73 pct late Thursday.

FOREX: The dollar slipped slightly against the euro and the pound Friday, maintaining some of the gains that followed a pair of European interest-rate decisions. The euro was worth 1.4506 usd in late New York trading -- up from 1.4459 usd in New York late Thursday, when it lost more than a US cent.

RP merchandise exports up 21% in December

Philippine merchandise exports grew 21 percent in December 2007, a reversal from November's contraction in outbound shipments.

The National Statistics Office said export earnings in December hit $4.478 billion on the back of improvements in exports of electronic products and furniture as well as strong receipts from shipments of petroleum products, gold and coconut oil.

Shipments of garments declined almost eight percent year-on-year though it remained the country's third largest source of export revenues.

The United States remained the country's top export destination in 2007, accounting for 17 percent of total receipts. Other top destinations include Japan, China, Hong Kong and the Netherlands.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio, Feb. 20 -- Sen. John McCain intensified his attacks on Sen. Biofuel firm cancels IPO

Imperium Renewables canceled its $345 million initial public offering Thursday in a move that came as little surprise.

For one thing, the industry's financial underpinnings have, in one analyst's words, "severely deteriorated in recent months." For another, it lost its chief executive two weeks ago.

The Seattle company, which last summer began operating the largest U.S. biodiesel facility in Grays Harbor, blamed "unfavorable market conditions" for the IPO's withdrawal.

Imperium may instead seek private financing, according to a document filed Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. A spokesman said the company wouldn't comment on future plans right now.

Imperium, which filed the IPO in May, had counted on using the money to build a string of similar facilities across the globe.

Panicky villagers turn to MLA

A multiplex-cum-mall is already coming up in place of Jagat Cinema in Sector 17. The construction of a multiplex in place of KC Cinema is yet to begin as the owner of the property is still waiting for sanction of the building plans.

Though the owners of Neelam Cinema have yet to apply for conversion under the Multiplex Policy-2006, sources in the real estate business confirmed that a Bangalore-based group had acquired leasehold rights of the property for a period of 35 years.

The arrangement would work as in case of the Fun Republic multiplex. The owner of the property had leased out the property to a subsidiary of Zee Group. The sources said the value of Neelam Cinema had been assessed at around Rs 280 crore.

One of the owners GS Kairon was contacted on the phone but was elusive on the issue.
